Friday's First Groove 9/6/24

Writer: Michael NevinsMichael Nevins

This is a funky one from The Meters. Sometimes, you can pinpoint exactly where you were when you first really heard a song. This is one of those songs for me (In my case, a restaurant in Tahoe City).

The drum part by Ziggy Modeliste is famous among drummers, and many debate the “correct” way to play it. If you're curious, there are now many videos of Ziggy playing it. I love the laid-back but infectious groove. It’s much more than the drums…the interplay with the other instruments works perfectly. It’s an instrumental with a hook. It’s not always easy to pull that off.
