Friday's First Groove 8/30/24

Writer: Michael NevinsMichael Nevins

I had the honor of being part of Living Colour's management team from the group's very beginning as a local NYC band. My time with them continued through to two Grammy Awards, both gold and multiplatinum albums, their rise up the charts, TV appearances, a stadium tour with The Rolling Stones, and the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. It was an incredible experience that changed my life and professional trajectory. I worked with great artists and passionate business professionals, attended musically historic events, traveled globally, met countless fans, learned a ton, and made many great, long-lasting friendships.

I'm still very proud to have played a part in the band's history, especially given the quality of their music, the messages, and the profound effect it had on so many fans and other artists.

I could share many fantastic Living Colour tracks (and I reserve the right to share others later 😁), but this one - Solace Of You - was in my head when I woke up this morning, and it had to be Friday's first groove.

Solace Of You feels very different than many Living Colour tracks, yet it also feels right at home within their eclectic body of work. It's adventurous yet accessible on so many levels and is a favorite among fans.

It's the second to last track on the Time's Up album (I initially indicated it was the closing track, but Tim Emgushov deftly fact-checked me, so I edited this), about which one recent reviewer wrote: "So begins a start-to-finish listening experience that still stands as a towering example of what a rock band is capable of when it stretches out and reaches for as many horizons as it can conceive." And I agree. The review appeared in Diffuser on the 25th anniversary of the album's release.

Comment and let me know what you think of this track 🤔

Here's the single:

And here's the entire Time's Up Album which is well worth your attention.
