Friday's First Groove 10/4/24

Writer: Michael NevinsMichael Nevins

This Friday’s groove is from the mighty Jamaican reggae vocal group Culture. It was released in 1977, and the title and lyrics reference the date July 7, 1977 (7/7/77). Marcus Garvey had predicted that there would be chaos on this date as two sevens came together. The song became a big hit in Jamaica and beyond.

I love the groove...Produced by Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson for the Joe Gibbs label. It's hard to go wrong with a young Sly Dunbar on drums. The credits are a bit murky, so it's unclear if it's Robbie Shakespeare on bass or Lloyd Parks...But don't sweat it, and don't sleep on Joseph Hill's lead vocal and the excellent harmonies from Albert Walker and Joseph Dayes. Despite the ominous predictions in the lyrics, the track has a pretty upbeat and happy vibe.

Enjoy it and....Happy Friday!
