Friday’s first groove. This Friday’s pick is Tighten Up by Archie Bell & The Drells. This one always makes me smile. I’m sharing the full-length version as most releases split up Tighten Up Part 1 and Part 2.
This track reached #1 on both the Billboard R&B and Pop charts in 1968.
Beyond the cool groove, it conveys a certain sense of joy….some guys on stage having fun, takng solos, and working hard to entertain their audience. In a 2017 interview, Archie Bell said when asked what a Drell was, he answered “…a Drell is a consummate entertainer and a gentleman…I always said to the guys: Treat people right, especially the ladies. If you treat the ladies right, you’re never going home.”
